    Directions:
    • Make a three column chart.
    • Label column 1 - KNOW. Write down at least five things you know that good readers do while they're reading.
    • Label column 2 - WANT TO KNOW. Write down at least three things you want to learn about how to be an effective reader.
    • Label column 3 - LEARNED. Take notes on powerpoint presentation on strategies good readers use before, during, and after reading.

  • Read the story Amelia's Road. Complete Making Connections with Amelia's Road WS [PDF]. Read the story and underline or highlight parts in the text that you can connect with. In the margin, make notations the way I demonstrated in class. What did the underlined part remind you of? How did you connect to the text? Use your Cognitive Reading Strategies handout to help you with sentence starters.
  • Notebook Entry #6 - Choose one of the following topics to write about. Topic 1 - Describe something that's really special to you. OR Topic 2 - If you were to make a box like Amelia's, that held all your special things, what would your box hold? Minimum 1/2 page.

  • Complete the other side of Making Connections WS [PDF] with three to five thoughtful connections to "Always Moving." Try to make text-text connections between this autobiography and "Seventh Grade" and/or Amelia's Road.
  • Notebook Entry #8 - "Always Moving" - Answer the following questions using complete sentences.
    • 1) Which of the three stories we read this week-- Amelia's Road, "Seventh Grade," or "Always Moving," did you like the best? What made you like that particular story the best?
    • 2) Which story did you find easier to make connections to? Why?
    • 3) Write a paragraph describing the connections you were able to make in the story you chose for answer #2.

  • Notebook Entry #9 - Making Predictions with Lio. (If you were absent, do the following: Make a two column chart on your paper. Label the left column "What's Happening." Label the right column "Prediction/Support." In the left column right down five things that are happening in your Independent Reading Book right now. Then, in the right column, made a prediction for each event. What do you think will happen next? Give a reason (Support) for each of your predictions. For example: What's Happening - Susie is nervous about going to school. Prediction/Support - I think that Arnold is going to ask her to the dance because he mentioned the idea to one of his friends.
    HW: Grammar Book - Review the Capitalization Rules Handout in your Yellow Folder. Do Exercise Review C, p. 281 - 282. Write out the sentences using correct capitalization.

  • Notebook Entry #10 - Write about a time when something surprised you. It could be a time when an experience didn't turn out the way you expected. Or you could write about a time when a person didn't turn out to be the way you first thought he or she was going to be. Or maybe you learned how to do something that you didn't think you could learn how to do. Minimum1/2 page.
  • Read "Terri Jackson" [PDF]. Write your responses on a separate sheet of paper.

  • Notebook Entry #11 - Textbook Features. 1) Make a mental image of your history textbook. Brainstorm a list of all the textbook features that the publisher uses to help you learn and understand the information in the book. 2) View the powerpoint presentation shown below or view it online by clicking this link. Circle all the textbook features that you included on your list. Add features that you didn't have on your list. You should have 12 textbook features all together.
  • Notebook Entry #12 - Making Textbook Predictions. Skim over the history textbook article. Write ten Predict/Support statements about the article. What do you think you would learn about in this chapter? (Predict) What are you basing your predictions on? (Support) Examples: I predict I will learn about Umayyad people because they are mentioned in the Thinking/Focus question and in a sub-title. I predict we're going to learn about the years 635 - 750 because those are the years shown on the timeline.
    HW: If you did not do last Tuesday's homework because of confusion over the assignment, please do it for homework today. Grammar Book - Review the Capitalization Rules Handout in your Yellow Folder. Do Exercise Review C, p. 281 - 282. Write out the sentences using correct capitalization.   • Read the story That Book Woman [PDF]. Make five predictions about the story on a separate sheet of paper. Use complete sentences, be specific, and support your predictions with evidence from the text. Turn in. If you were absent, make the following five predictions:
    • 1) At the end of stanze 2, predict what you think the story will be about. Explain your reasons.
    • 2) At the end of stanza 3, explain what you think the conflict of the story will be. Example: "I think the conflict of the story might be . . . because . . ."
    • 3) At the end of stanza 6, predict what the strange's treasure might be. Example: "I predict the treasure is . . . because . . ."
    • 4) At the end of stanza 15, predict what you think will happen next.
    • 5) At the end of stanza 18, predict what what gift Cal will give the Book Woman.
  • Notebook Entry #13 - That Book Woman - Answer the following questions in a short paragraph: What surprised Cal? How did his thinking change during the course of the story?

  • Steps to Writing an Autobiographical Narrative [PDF]
    • Step 1: Read and understand the prompt or writing directions [PDF].
    • Step 2: Decide on your topic.
    • Steps 3 - 7: Planning to write.
  • On a piece of binder paper, create a plot outline in order to plan your narrative. You need to include a basic situation (characters, setting, conflict), a series of events, climax, and resolution. Make sure that you can clearly state why this event was meaningful to you.
    HW: Finish the plan for your Autobiographical Narrative. Due Wednesday.

    • Use blue or black ink.
    • Write on one side of the paper only.
    • Leave one inch margins.
    • NO TYPING!
